  Abstract:

  The design of high intensity superconducting linear accelerators for applications like Accelerator Driven Systems (ADS) or spallation neutron sources is subject to limitations caused by space charge. We first review the main candidates - emittance exchange and structure resonances -, which are driven by internal resonance effects as a result of space charge nonlinearity. Our main focus is the limitation by 90 degree phase advance structure resonance. We find that it is always valid transversely, but not necessarily longitudinally. Structures, where the longitudinal phase advance can be higher than 90 degrees are discussed. Possible advantages are larger longitudinal focusing gradients and resulting advantages in length.
